The Missing Link

The $10 Trillion Prize authored by consultants at the Boston Consulting Group digs deeper into the changing consumer landscape in China and India to find out the big, juicy, revenue model that should excite everybody who cares to be in these two markets. And numbers, as always, make for a fascinating reading.

Here are some of them: by 2020 there will be 1 billion middle class consumers in China and 320 million in India; Chinese born in 2009 will consumer 38 times more than those born in 1960 while Indians born in 2009 will consume 13 times more; consumption in China will reach $6.2 trillion by 2020 and $3.6 trillion in India. There is enough to sell; and there are more than enough buyers.

But there is a missing link that few talk about while relating the dazzling story of potential growth and opportunity in the two countries. It is that while most countries are using China’s growth to their advantage, India has not really managed to turn it into an opportunity like others.
